Dog Walking Around Skipton: Mud, Mates & Magnificent Views š¾
2nd October 2026
If your dog could choose the perfect holiday destination, thereās a good chance Skipton would be pretty high on the list.
Why? Walks, smells, squirrels, streams, fields, other dogs and an alarming number of opportunities to get muddy.
And if youāre staying at Thisledo Holiday Cottage, you donāt even need to get in the car to start exploring.
Start with Aireville Park
Just a short stroll from the cottage is Aireville Park, one of our favourite places for an easy dog walk.
Itās particularly handy first thing in the morning when your four-legged alarm clock has decided that 6.15am is a perfectly reasonable time to begin the day.
Thereās plenty of space to stretch the legs, sniff around and generally investigate what the local canine population has been up to overnight.
And if your dog has worked up an appetite, thereās the cafĆ© at the leisure centre for the humans. Sadly, we canāt promise the dog gets a bacon butty.
Follow the canal
From the park, you can head towards the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, where the walking becomes a little more scenic.
Itās lovely and flat, which is particularly welcome if your idea of a challenging hike is finding the remote control after sitting down.
The towpath is great for a leisurely wander, with canal boats passing by, ducks doing their best to avoid enthusiastic dogs and plenty of interesting smells for your dog to catalogue.
Just remember: ducks are not included in the holiday booking.
Into Skipton Woods
For something a little more adventurous, head towards Skipton Woods.
The woodland paths provide a completely different experience, with trees, streams, wildlife and plenty of opportunities for your dog to discover exactly how much mud can fit between four paws.
Itās beautiful at any time of year, but after heavy rain it can become a useful test of your waterproof clothing.
And your dog?
Your dog will consider it the best day ever.
Further afield ā the Yorkshire Dales
Of course, Skipton is known as the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, so youāre spoilt for choice if you fancy heading out for a longer walk.
Within a short drive you can be wandering through some of the most spectacular countryside in Yorkshire.
There are walks for serious hikers, gentle rambles for those who prefer a more relaxed pace, and plenty in between.
Our advice?
Check the weather.
The Yorkshire Dales has a remarkable ability to produce four seasons during one dog walk.
Blue skies when you leave.
Rain halfway round.
A suspiciously strong wind near the top.
And sunshine again just as you arrive back at the car looking like youāve been rescued from the North Sea.
Back to Thisledo
After a good walk, thereās nothing better than heading back to Thisledo, putting the kettle on and letting everyone recover.
Well, almost everyone.
Your dog will probably spend the next 20 minutes investigating the garden, followed by a drink of water, a quick snack and then an extremely impressive nap.
Thisledo is dog-friendly because we know that dogs are part of the family.
We welcome up to two dogs, with no additional pet charge, although we do ask that dogs stay downstairs so that the upstairs bedrooms remain lovely and clean for every guest.
So bring the walking boots.
Bring the waterproofs.
Bring the dog towels.
And, most importantly, bring the dog.
Because a holiday in Skipton is considerably more fun when you have someone with four legs to blame for the muddy footprints.
Thisledo Holiday Cottage ā a great base for exploring Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales, one paw print at a time. š¾
