The Great Holiday Hamper Hokey-Cokey (Or Why We Stick to Biscuits and a Brew)

Let’s talk about the much-hyped holiday cottage arrival hamper – that little basket of treats meant to say “welcome,” “relax,” and possibly “look, your money went somewhere!” Now, we’ve stayed in plenty of places where the arrival basket looked like it had been curated by a slightly overexcited contestant on Come Dine With Me. Homemade jam! Artisanal flapjacks! Wine – sometimes red, sometimes white, sometimes… questionable!

And don’t get us wrong, some of those baskets have been lovely. But more often than not, they become a sort of holiday game show challenge:

  • “Will this wine be drinkable?”
  • “Do these biscuits contain fennel?”
  • “Is that chutney or face scrub?”

Everyone’s tastes are different, which turns the humble welcome hamper into a bit of a minefield. Red wine or white? Or no wine – I don’t even like wine! Where’s the prosecco? These cakes are dry. These biscuits have raisins. I don’t do raisins. This jam is too raspberry-ish. (You know who you are.)

So while you’re there navigating an opinionated tray of miscellaneous nibbles, no one’s noticing the uncomfortable sofa, the flickering lights, or the mysterious smell coming from the washing machine. We’ve even stayed in places with fantastic welcome hampers… and utterly disastrous cottages. (You can’t bribe your way out of broken plumbing with a box of fudge, no matter how organic it is.)

Which brings us to Thisledo.
Here, we keep it simple – the Yorkshire way. A proper brew (Yorkshire Tea, of course), a small jar of coffee for those who like to live dangerously, a jug of fresh milk in the fridge, and a couple of chocolate biscuits to keep you going until you work out the oven. No ceremony. No chutney roulette. Just a warm, no-nonsense welcome.

Because at Thisledo, we believe your holiday cottage should be remembered for being clean, cosy, well-equipped, and exactly as promised – not because it had a lavender shortbread the size of a paving slab.

So bring your own wine. Bring your own oat milk and sun-dried beetroot crisps if you like. We’ll put the kettle on and make sure everything else is spot on.

Thisledo Holiday Cottage – no faff, just proper good
