A Day at Beautiful Bolton Abbey: A Holiday Must-Do

If there’s one place near Skipton that never fails to charm visitors—whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth—it’s Bolton Abbey. Set in the stunning Wharfe Valley and just a short drive from Thisledo Holiday Cottage, this beauty spot ticks all the right boxes for a perfect Yorkshire day out: nature, history, riverside lounging, a good café or two… and even giant deckchairs (because why not?).

🌿 Nature That Nurtures the Soul

The moment you step onto the paths of Bolton Abbey Estate, the bustle of modern life melts away. There are over 80 miles of footpaths, winding through ancient woodlands, across open moorland, and alongside the glistening River Wharfe. Whether you’re a determined hiker or a meandering wanderer with an ice cream in hand, you’ll find a route that suits your mood—and your shoes.

Top tip: Don’t miss the Strid Wood walk. It’s lush, leafy, and leads you to the famously narrow and powerful stretch of river known as The Strid. Best admired from a safe distance—this stretch of water has more drama than a soap opera.

📸 Picture-Perfect Views

Bring your camera (or at least your phone with 2% battery left) because this place is ridiculously photogenic. Think ruined priory silhouetted against a blue sky, reflections on the water, dappled forest light, and those iconic stepping stones that make even grown-ups giggle like kids.

And yes, those giant deckchairs with their pastel stripes are real—and practically beg to be Instagrammed. You haven’t truly experienced Bolton Abbey until you’ve clambered awkwardly into one and pretended you’re the King or Queen of Wharfedale.

🐾 Dog-Friendly Days Out

Travelling with your four-legged friend? They’ll love Bolton Abbey as much as you do. The estate is incredibly dog-friendly, with clear signage about lead areas and plenty of spots to stop for a sniff, splash, or snooze in the sun. There’s even a dog-friendly café. Pawsome.

🍰 Tea, Cake and Tranquility

After all that fresh air and admiration of nature, you’ll deserve a little treat. Thankfully, Bolton Abbey has that covered too. The village tearoom, Cavendish Pavilion, and local spots nearby serve up hearty Yorkshire fare, cream teas, and the kind of coffee that gives you the strength to make it back across the stepping stones (or not… there’s a bridge if you’re feeling wobbly).

Why It’s a Must-Do on Your Skipton Holiday

  • Proximity: Just a short scenic drive from Thisledo Holiday Cottage, Bolton Abbey is the perfect day trip.
  • All-Season Appeal: Gorgeous in spring bloom, shady and lush in summer, golden in autumn, and atmospheric in winter.
  • All Ages Welcome: Kids, couples, solo walkers, dogs, grandparents—all find joy here.
  • A Sense of Peace: There’s something restorative about this place. Maybe it’s the water, maybe it’s the history—or maybe it’s just the magic of the Yorkshire Dales.

💬 Final Thoughts

If you’re staying at Thisledo Holiday Cottage and don’t make time for Bolton Abbey, you’ll regret it. Probably for the rest of the week. Possibly for the rest of your life. Alright, maybe not that long—but definitely until your next visit.

So pack your flask, grab your walking boots (or sandals if you’re brave), and head for the hills. Or rather, the abbey.

🧺☀️ Because when it comes to classic Yorkshire days out, Bolton Abbey is the crème de la clotted cream.

Where to Roar for the British Lions Tour in Skipton (Without Getting the Look from Your Partner)

Ah, the British & Irish Lions tour – that magical time when four nations unite, rugby shirts are dug out from the bottom drawer, and grown-ups suddenly believe they’re tactical masterminds after two pints. If you’re lucky enough to be staying in Skipton during the tour (perhaps at a delightful little holiday cottage with comfy sofas and a smart TV… ahem Thisledo, anyone?), you’ll no doubt want to catch the action without risking a full-blown domestic over how much rugby is too much rugby.

But where to watch the games? And more importantly… how to keep the peace with your partner, who may not see three consecutive Saturdays of rugby as the romantic Dales getaway they had in mind?

Let’s tackle this head-on – here’s a Skipton-based guide for Lions lovers and long-suffering non-fans alike.

🦁 For the Rugby Fan: Where to Plant Yourself

1. The Red Lion
This central pub is rugby-friendly and has screens in the bar area. Expect a decent pint, plenty of locals offering their opinions on scrum resets, and a hearty pub meal that may or may not come with a side of shouting at the telly.

2. Venue Sports Bar
If you want the full-on, big-screen, all-the-commentary, proper-fan atmosphere — Venue Sports Bar is your top pick in Skipton. It’s made for watching sport. Multiple screens, plenty of seating, and a bar fully stocked with all the essentials (crisps and beer). You won’t miss a single conversion, and no one will look at you funny when you leap off your chair yelling “TRY!”

3. One of Skipton’s Micropubs (Ask Nicely!)
Skipton’s buzzing with quirky little micropubs, and while they’re not technically sports bars, don’t write them off. Places like Early Doors, Beer Engine, or The Mess Room are run by real characters — and if you happen to ask sweetly (perhaps while ordering a second pint of something hoppy and local), you might just find the game on in the corner. It’s rugby with real ale and rustic charm. Just don’t expect a Jumbotron screen… or a packet of pork scratchings after 8pm.

4. Stay In and Watch on the Cottage Smart TV
Yes – Thisledo Holiday Cottage has a big comfy sofa, fast Wi-Fi, and a Smart TV. Which means you can watch the match with your feet up, a cold beer from the fridge, and no queuing for the loo. Bliss. And if you’re really clever, you can turn it into “a cosy afternoon in” (see below).

👀 For the Non-Rugby Fan Partner

Let’s be honest – if your other half isn’t quite as passionate about tackles, scrums, and breakdowns as you are, they may have imagined long walks, local markets, maybe a cream tea… and not you shouting “GET IT WIDE!” at a television in the middle of the day.

But don’t panic – with a bit of strategic planning, everyone’s a winner.

1. A Spa Session at the Coniston Hotel
You go full roar, they go full relax. The Coniston Hotel spa is just a short drive away between Gargrave and Settle and offers treatments that’ll make them forget they’re being temporarily abandoned for 80 minutes.

2. Market Day Meandering
Skipton’s famous market runs on Saturdays – perfect timing! While you’re glued to the test match, they can potter around picking up Yorkshire chutney, handmade crafts, and a new scarf they’ll ask your opinion on later (just say it’s lovely).

3. A Solo Stroll Along the Canal
Give them a flask, a book, and suggest a peaceful wander by the Leeds-Liverpool Canal while you “stay back to sort lunch.” They’ll return refreshed and you’ll be updated on whether Farrell’s finally found his kicking boots.

4. Afternoon Tea at The Cake’ole
They get a pink teapot full of prosecco and a plate stacked with cake. You get to shout at the TV. We call that a balanced relationship.

🏉 A Peaceful Post-Match Plan

Now, here’s the golden rule: if you’re claiming a Lions game as “sacred time,” then after the match, it’s your partner’s turn. Suggest a romantic walk up to Skipton Castle or even a cheeky late lunch at Le Caveau. And for extra credit? Pop into M&S Food afterwards and pretend you planned a romantic cottage supper all along.

Final Word:

Skipton has something for every Lions fan and every patient partner. Whether you’re cheering on the boys in red or politely tolerating your other half’s passionate match commentary, there’s no better place to enjoy it all than this charming corner of the Yorkshire Dales.

Just remember: when they say, “Are they still playing?”, the correct answer is not “It’s a best-of-three test series.” It’s “Not for much longer, love – fancy a walk?” 😉

Medieval Madness at Skipton Castle – Time to Cheer, Chomp, and (Possibly) Dance!

Medieval Madness at Skipton Castle – Time to Cheer, Chomp, and (Possibly) Dance!

If you’re staying at Thisledo Holiday Cottage this weekend and hear battle cries echoing across the hills, don’t worry – you haven’t stumbled into a Game of Thrones reboot. It’s just the fifteenth century, popping by for a visit.

That’s right: on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July, the brilliant bunch from Buckingham’s Retinue will be turning Skipton Castle into a living, breathing medieval soap opera. There’ll be archery, combat displays, fashion shows, and actual sword school – because obviously, nothing says “relaxing weekend break” like a little light warfare.

And best of all? Lord and Lady Clifford are hosting, so you won’t have to.

🏰 What’s All This Then?

For two whole days, the castle will be full of people in pointy shoes, juggling medieval vegetables, showing off their chainmail, and politely stabbing each other for your entertainment. You can wander through the ancient halls, chat to a cook about what passed for dinner in 1475 (spoiler: no sourdough), and cheer on your chosen champion in the archery tournament.

Think of it as Downton Abbey meets Gladiators, but with more velvet and fewer health & safety forms.

📜 The (Very Important) Timetable

Every day, both Saturday and Sunday:

TimeWhat’s Going On
10:00amThe Castle wakes up – meet the medieval household
10:30amArchery display on the main lawn – lots of twanging
11:00amKnight School – your kids become mini-warriors (you’re welcome)
11:45amMedieval fashion show – those hose are tight
12:30pmFood talk in the kitchen – no air fryers in sight
1:15pmLord & Lady Clifford get served – etiquette lessons included
2:00pmMumming play – 15th-century theatre. (No mimes, we promise.)
2:45pmMusic & dance – audience participation encouraged (but not required – unless you’re brave)
3:30pmArchery competition – someone will take this very seriously
4:15pmCombat display – swords, shouting, general heroic chaos
5:00pmEvent ends – back to your cottage for wine and a sit down

🎟️ Plan Like a Noble

You can book your tickets and parking in advance here:

There’s also a great gift shop (souvenir goblets, anyone?) and a lovely tearoom for post-battle cake. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is festive, and it’s all set within one of the best-preserved castles in England – practically next door to Thisledo.

🐾 Bonus Points If…

  • You come dressed in something vaguely medieval. A tea towel cloak is completely acceptable.
  • You attempt the medieval dancing after a trip to the pub.
  • You use the phrase “Huzzah!” at least once.

So polish your goblet, lace up your imaginary bodice, and march forth to Skipton Castle. The past is calling – and it wants you to bring snacks.

P.S. No actual sword experience required. Just enthusiasm and perhaps a decent pair of walking shoes.

🧳 Trump’s Tariffs Won’t Touch Your Yorkshire Holiday

Why your getaway to Skipton is blissfully immune to world politics

Let’s face it: the world is full of drama. Political spats, economic rumblings, trade tariffs… it’s enough to make you want to pack a bag and disappear for a few days. Good news: you absolutely can. And even better – you can do it without worrying about whether President Trump’s latest tariff tantrum will affect your well-earned break in the Yorkshire Dales.

No Global Politics Here – Just Sheep and Scones

At Thisledo Holiday Cottage, you won’t find a single mention of international trade deals (except maybe over the cheese counter). Instead, you’ll find a peaceful stone cottage in the heart of Skipton, with comfy beds, and a town centre just a short stroll away.

While world leaders debate steel, soybeans, and sanctions, your biggest decision will be whether to:

  • Have another slice of Yorkshire parkin
  • Go for a canal walk or a castle tour
  • Add mushy peas to your fish and chips (pro tip: yes)

Trade Wars Can’t Touch Tea Time

Let’s be clear: no matter what happens in the corridors of global power, your cuppa at the local tearoom is safe. Trump may have opinions about international economics, but we guarantee he’s never tried Skipton’s famous pork pies, or he’d have slapped a protection order on them years ago.

What Is Protected? Your Peace and Quiet

Thisledo isn’t just a cottage; it’s an escape clause. From tariffs. From timelines. From 24-hour news. Whether you’re walking the Dales, pottering round the market, or simply sitting with a book and the dog at your feet, you’ll find yourself blissfully unbothered by world events.

In Summary…

  • Trump can keep his tariffs.
  • You can keep your cottage break.
  • And the only deal you need to strike is whether it’s a cream tea before or after your walk.

📅 Book your stay now, before world leaders discover how good it is and try to impose import duties on joy.

Looking for a Skipton Cottage with Parking? You Might Just Be Barking Up the Wrong Tree (But in a Good Way!)

So, you’re searching for a Skipton cottage with parking. Sensible. Logical. Practical.

But may we tempt you to abandon logic—just temporarily—and choose a charming little gem that doesn’t have parking… but does have everything else you didn’t even realise you needed?

Enter: Thisledo Holiday Cottage, Skipton’s answer to the question, “What if perfection didn’t come with a driveway?”

“But where will I park?!”

Let’s tackle the Yorkshire pudding in the room. No, we don’t have private parking. We also don’t have a helipad, a chocolate fountain, or a butler named Geoffrey (we’re working on it).

But what we do have is a lovely town-centre cottage, just a stone’s throw from Skipton High Street, where you can practically smell the market stalls and hear the cheerful clink of teacups.

There’s on-street parking nearby, a couple of handy car parks a short stroll away, and—let’s face it—you were planning on exploring on foot, weren’t you? The Dales don’t do drive-thrus.

Location, Location, Liberation

Booking a cottage with parking means you’re probably not in the middle of Skipton. You’ll end up perched somewhere scenic-but-slightly-remote, making every morning a “which boots do I need just to get to the bakery?” kind of situation.

At Thisledo, you’re in the town. Walk to the shops. Wander to the canal. Hobble back from the pub. No designated driver, no soggy shoes, no uphill battles. It’s the kind of convenience that’ll make you wonder why you ever prioritised your car’s comfort over your own.

Your Car Will Forgive You

We get it—your car is part of the family. But honestly, after the drive through the Dales, it could probably do with a few days of peace and quiet too. Let it nap safely in one of Skipton’s secure car parks while you live your best life pretending you don’t even own a vehicle.

What You Get Instead of Parking

  • A warm, stylish, dog-friendly cottage so cosy even your socks will feel underdressed
  • Walking distance to Skipton Castle, shops, cafés, and chippies (oh hello, Bizzie Lizzie’s)
  • A front-row seat to all the town’s charm—without having to reverse out of a tight spot
  • A good excuse to pack light and pretend you’re on a quaint Victorian walking holiday

In Conclusion: Park the Car, Not Your Dreams

So yes, we may not have a drive. But we do have character, comfort, and one of the best locations in town. Plus, no reversing into a hedge after a long pub lunch. Worth it, right?

Thisledo Holiday Cottage: it might not have parking, but it does have your perfect Skipton getaway. Just bring your walking shoes… and possibly your sense of humour.

🛏️ Cosy Comfort, All to Yourself

No sharing the remote. No worrying about snoring (unless it’s your own). Thisledo is a snug, stone-built bolthole with everything you need for a peaceful stay. Cook (or don’t). Lounge. Read. Binge something questionable on Netflix. It’s your holiday.

🚶‍♀️Out the Door, Into the Dales

The Yorkshire Dales aren’t just scenic—they’re soul-soothing. From solo strolls along the canal to ambitious hikes over Malham Cove, there’s a route to match your energy. And when you’re ready for civilisation, Skipton’s independent shops, cafés and famous market are a short walk away.

☕ Table for One? Absolutely.

Skipton’s eateries are friendly and relaxed, with plenty of places where a solo diner is more than welcome. Grab a cuppa at Bean Loved, people-watch over a pastry at The Cake’ole, or get a chippy tea from Bizzie Lizzie’s (no judgement if it’s eaten in pyjamas back at the cottage).

🐾 Dog Companion Optional

Many of our solo guests bring a four-legged friend, and we’re delighted to host them too. Thisledo is proudly dog-friendly, and the surrounding countryside is tail-waggingly good for walkies.

✨ A Little Escape from Everything

Sometimes, you just need to press pause. No itineraries. No one else’s agenda. Just a change of scene, a comfortable bed, and the kind of quiet that makes your brain say “thank you.”

Whether you’re a seasoned solo adventurer or dipping a toe into going it alone, Thisledo offers a safe, comfortable and characterful base in the heart of Skipton. Come as you are. Stay as long as you like. And don’t be surprised if you book your next stay before you leave.

Retail Therapy Returns: Skipton’s Former Rackhams Store Reopens with a Makeover

If you thought a holiday in Skipton was all about historic castles, scenic canal walks, and hearty pub lunches—well, you’d be mostly right. But now there’s a new reason to pop Skipton onto your getaway list: the grand reopening of the town’s beloved former Rackhams store.

After a long hibernation and a top-to-bottom refurbishment, this iconic High Street landmark has burst back to life—and it’s brought some high-street heavy hitters with it. Say hello to Peacocks, Bonmarché, and The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, now open and ready for business in the heart of Skipton, North Yorkshire.

From Department Store to Delightful Shopping Spot

Locals remember it fondly as Rackhams—a Yorkshire shopping staple where you might once have picked up a posh jumper for Grandma or a cheeky bottle of perfume for yourself. Now, with its gleaming new interior and stylish shopfront, the building has been lovingly brought back into the retail fold.

And for visitors staying in any of Skipton’s holiday cottages, it’s a brilliant bonus. A holiday isn’t just about walking up hills or navigating the cheese counter at Booths (although, to be fair, both are essential experiences). Sometimes, you just want a bit of retail therapy without having to venture far—and now you’ve got it, right in the centre of town.

What’s Inside the Revamped Store?

  • Peacocks offers affordable fashion for the whole family, so if you’ve packed for summer and Yorkshire decides to do autumn, you’re covered.
  • Bonmarché serves up comfortable, flattering clothes for the over-50s with a touch of flair—perfect if you fancy a wardrobe refresh mid-break.
  • The Edinburgh Woollen Mill has your back (and your front) with traditional knits, walking-friendly layers, and classic country style.

Just a Short Stroll from Your Holiday Doorstep

The refurbished store is nestled right on Skipton’s High Street, surrounded by independent shops, cafés, pubs, and the famous market. If you’re staying in a holiday cottage in Skipton town centre, you can practically roll out of bed and into a bargain.

It’s the perfect rainy-day escape or a relaxed add-on to your day of sightseeing. Why not stroll from your cottage, pick up a new scarf, grab a cuppa, and pop by the canal for a bit of people-watching? Or stock up on cosy jumpers before heading out to explore the Yorkshire Dales.

Skipton: Shopping, Scenery, and Sheep

With this new shopping hub open again, Skipton truly offers something for everyone—history buffs, walkers, foodies, and now bargain hunters too. Whether you’re here for a romantic weekend, a solo writing retreat, or a family holiday, a little wander around the reopened store adds that extra sparkle to your stay.

And the best bit? When you return to your cosy cottage after a day out, bags in hand and bargains secured, you’ll have something new to wear for tomorrow’s adventures—be it a hike in the hills or a posh lunch in town.

Coming to Skipton soon? Don’t forget your walking boots, your appetite—and just maybe leave a little extra room in your suitcase…

The Great Holiday Hamper Hokey-Cokey (Or Why We Stick to Biscuits and a Brew)

Let’s talk about the much-hyped holiday cottage arrival hamper – that little basket of treats meant to say “welcome,” “relax,” and possibly “look, your money went somewhere!” Now, we’ve stayed in plenty of places where the arrival basket looked like it had been curated by a slightly overexcited contestant on Come Dine With Me. Homemade jam! Artisanal flapjacks! Wine – sometimes red, sometimes white, sometimes… questionable!

And don’t get us wrong, some of those baskets have been lovely. But more often than not, they become a sort of holiday game show challenge:

  • “Will this wine be drinkable?”
  • “Do these biscuits contain fennel?”
  • “Is that chutney or face scrub?”

Everyone’s tastes are different, which turns the humble welcome hamper into a bit of a minefield. Red wine or white? Or no wine – I don’t even like wine! Where’s the prosecco? These cakes are dry. These biscuits have raisins. I don’t do raisins. This jam is too raspberry-ish. (You know who you are.)

So while you’re there navigating an opinionated tray of miscellaneous nibbles, no one’s noticing the uncomfortable sofa, the flickering lights, or the mysterious smell coming from the washing machine. We’ve even stayed in places with fantastic welcome hampers… and utterly disastrous cottages. (You can’t bribe your way out of broken plumbing with a box of fudge, no matter how organic it is.)

Which brings us to Thisledo.
Here, we keep it simple – the Yorkshire way. A proper brew (Yorkshire Tea, of course), a small jar of coffee for those who like to live dangerously, a jug of fresh milk in the fridge, and a couple of chocolate biscuits to keep you going until you work out the oven. No ceremony. No chutney roulette. Just a warm, no-nonsense welcome.

Because at Thisledo, we believe your holiday cottage should be remembered for being clean, cosy, well-equipped, and exactly as promised – not because it had a lavender shortbread the size of a paving slab.

So bring your own wine. Bring your own oat milk and sun-dried beetroot crisps if you like. We’ll put the kettle on and make sure everything else is spot on.

Thisledo Holiday Cottage – no faff, just proper good
