Walking Safely in the Yorkshire Dales During Hot, Dry Weather

The Yorkshire Dales are at their most beautiful during long, sunny spells. Blue skies, stunning views and miles of footpaths make it the perfect time to explore the countryside around Skipton, Malham, Grassington and Bolton Abbey.

However, prolonged hot and dry weather brings extra risks, both for your health and for the countryside itself. Whether you’re enjoying a gentle riverside stroll or tackling one of the Dales’ famous walks, a little preparation will help keep both you and this special landscape safe.

Stay Safe in the Heat

Even in Yorkshire, summer temperatures can be surprisingly high, especially on exposed hills where there is very little shade.

Before setting off:

  • Carry plenty of water – at least 1.5 to 2 litres per person for longer walks.
  • Wear a hat and apply high-factor sunscreen before you leave.
  • Choose lightweight, breathable clothing.
  • Wear comfortable walking boots or shoes with good grip.
  • Plan to walk earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon when temperatures are lower.
  • Tell someone where you’re going if you’re planning a longer hike.

Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

If you or someone in your group starts to experience:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Unusual tiredness

stop walking immediately, move into shade if possible, drink water slowly and allow the body to cool down before continuing.

Protect the Yorkshire Dales from Wildfires

After weeks of dry weather, grass, bracken and heather can become tinder dry. A single spark can quickly develop into a devastating wildfire, destroying wildlife habitats and putting livestock, walkers and emergency services at risk.

Please Never:

  • Light disposable barbecues.
  • Use camping stoves on dry vegetation.
  • Light campfires.
  • Drop cigarette ends or matches.
  • Leave glass bottles behind, as they can sometimes concentrate sunlight.

Many areas of the Yorkshire Dales have strict restrictions during periods of high fire risk, and it’s always worth checking local guidance before your walk.

Keep Dogs Safe Too

Dogs can struggle in hot weather just as much as people.

Remember to:

  • Carry extra water for your dog.
  • Allow plenty of rest stops.
  • Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day.
  • Check the ground temperature before walking on roads or pavements.
  • Keep dogs under close control around livestock.

Leave No Trace

The Yorkshire Dales remain beautiful because everyone plays their part in looking after them.

Please:

  • Take all litter home with you.
  • Stay on marked footpaths where possible.
  • Close gates behind you.
  • Respect wildlife and grazing animals.
  • Leave the countryside exactly as you found it.
