Why We’ve Decided to Put Up a Small Sign for Thisledo

When you run a holiday cottage, most of your decisions are straightforward—cleaner schedules, booking systems, welcome packs. But every now and then, something small comes along that actually needs a bit more thought.

For us, that was whether to put up a simple A4 sign for Thisledo.

After weighing it up properly, we’ve decided to go ahead—and here’s why.

It’s About Helping Guests, Not “Advertising”

The main reason is actually very practical.

Finding a holiday cottage for the first time isn’t always as easy as it should be. Sat navs can be vague, postcodes can drop you in the wrong spot, and when you’re arriving somewhere new—often after a long journey—the last thing you want is uncertainty.

A small, clear sign makes that arrival smoother. It removes doubt, avoids awkward “are we in the right place?” moments, and helps guests settle in quickly.

That first impression matters more than people think.

A Level Playing Field

We’re also conscious that in areas with multiple holiday cottages, visibility naturally becomes part of the landscape.

Some properties are easier to spot than others. Some benefit from location, others from passing footfall. A discreet sign is simply a way of making sure Thisledo is just as easy to find and recognise as anywhere else.

It’s not about standing out aggressively—it’s about not being overlooked.

Being Considerate of Others

That said, we know this kind of decision doesn’t happen in isolation.

We’re part of a small community of cottage owners, and maintaining good relationships matters far more than a piece of signage ever could.

So our approach is very simple:

  • Keep it small (A4 as planned)
  • Keep it tasteful and in keeping with the surroundings
  • Position it sensibly and respectfully

In short, something that does its job without drawing unnecessary attention.

No Arms Race

One thing we’re very mindful of is avoiding a “more signs lead to more signs” situation.

That’s not what we want, and it’s not good for anyone.

This is about a single, subtle addition—not the start of turning the area into a row of adverts. The intention is clarity, not clutter.

A Small Change That Improves the Experience

In the end, this decision comes down to something quite simple:

If a small sign can make arrival easier, reduce confusion, and quietly improve the guest experience—without negatively affecting others—then it’s a worthwhile addition.

That’s the balance we’ve aimed for.
