Beacons Festival, Skipton
17th August 2012
Another weekend and it seems that Skipton and The Yorkshire Dales have another festival for visitors to the area to attend.
The Beacons festival is much more than a music festival, with a fancy dress theme, gourmet food, a healing quarter and much more, this really will be something different for visitors to Skipton.
The Pennine Way & The Yorkshire Dales
17th August 2012
So, you’ve explored Skipton Castle, spent more than you planned on Skipton Market & eaten & drunk more than you planned in the pubs and restaurants of Skipton; it must be time to go out and explore the Yorkshire Dales.
Now the trouble with the Yorkshire Dales and walking is that there are a lot of hills and a lot of very steep hills! So, whilst the thought of striding out in the dales might appeal, it might very soon feel like some SAS training session.
However, the Yorkshire Dales does offer some more gentle walks and our favourite is walking along the River aire from airton to Malham and back. Most of the walk is on level ground alongside the river ( which is really a stream at this stage), there’s a little bit of a climb through Hanlith, but it’s well worth it for the view of Malham Cove & Gordale Scar.
The great thing about this walk is that you can time it to perfection and eat lunch at one of the pubs in Malham. The Buck Inn and The Lister Arms both offer excellent food and service and great beer.
Fully refuelled and refreshed, you can then enjoy the walk back to Airton.
Here’s a video of the view from Hanlith towards Malham Cove.
Skipton in The Yorkshire Dales Near Lancashire
17th August 2012
It often comes as a surprise to visitors to our holiday cottage in skipton, which is the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, that they are in fact only a few miles from Lancashire!!
Take a trip down the A59 and within minutes you will reach Lancashire. Whilst some of the closest Lancashire villages/towns such as Earby & Barnoldswick ( Barlick to the locals) are officially in Lancashire, this is very much a historical dispute, with many locals considering themselves as Yorkshiremen!
In fact, if you travel along the A59 towards Preston, the dark satanic mills of Lancashire are no where to be seen and you will travel along one of the most pictoresque routes in the locality, via off the A59 into the many quaint and lovely villages and hamlets and you can find great walking coutry and some fantastic country pubs.
So, venture out of the Yorkshire dales and explore the delights of Lancashire, it really isn’t that bad!
The Golden Post Boxes of Yorkshire
11th August 2012
Did you know that to date that the Olympic Contestants from the County of Yorkshire have won so many medals that if Yorkshire had entered the Olympics as a country rather than as part of Team GB, they would currently be in 10th place in the medal league table.
Did you also know that Royal Mail in the home town of each winner of a gold medal repaints a Post Box Gold to celebrate the atheletes success.
So, here’s an interesting tour of Yorkshire to consider, where not use Skipton as your base and visit each of the Gold Post Boxes?
Skipton Barbers
10th August 2012
You’ve arrived at your holiday cottage, cases are unpacked and you start to walk into Skipton town centre, when suddenly you notice ‘ He’s not had his hair cut’ ! I told him to get it cut before we went on holiday, now I am going to have to look at his overgrown wiggy hairstyle for the next seven days!!
Fear not, Skipton has a good selection of Barbers & Hairdressers who will quickly bring his locks under control.
Try the Skipton Barbers on Belmont Street

or AJ Barbers on Swadford Sreet

Both are only a five minute walk from the holiday cottage.
Skipton Canal Trips
4th August 2012
Pennine Boat Trips have a great one hour guided canal tour this summer and to make it even more fun they have award-winning comedian Dave Spikey of Phoenix Nights and 8 Out of 10 Cats fame providing the commentary.
Besides the jokes and laughter, you’ll hear points of interest and fascinating stories of how the Leeds & Liverpool canal delivered the lifeblood of the industrial revolution through Yorkshire. There’s food and drink on board and if the weather is bad it’s a great way to take cover from the rain.
Tickest are £6.50 each for adults and can be booked on line at their website or booked at their booking office in the Wharf Basin on Coach Street, Skipton.

A Week In The Yorkshire Dales
4th August 2012
The Yorkshire Dales are looking great at the moment, all the rain we have had over the summer has ensured everything is lush and green.
Does the thought of some rest and relaxation in the Yorkshire countryside, with a little bit of energetic walking in the picturesque Dales, followed by a lunch and beer at a country pub, then back home to Skipton for some shopping and a evening meal in one of Skipton’s many restaurants appeal?
Then how about going self catering and staying in one of the many holiday cottages in skipton. Thisledo Holiday Cotatge offers great value for money, is located only a 5 minutes walk from the town centre and minutes away from open countryside.
We only have 6 weeks remaining unbooked this season, so if you are interested call us now on 01756 795024.
Skipton Castle English Civil War
29th July 2012
During the weekend of saturday 4th and sunday 5th august, why not go along to skipton castle to see the setting up of an encampment by the Military Unit, the Trayned Bandes.
These events are usually very well attended and provide a look into the past of the country and the English Civil War. Against the stunning back drop of Skipton Castle.
It should be a great out.
