Skipton Woods – The Hidden Woodland in Central Skipton

Many people come to Skipton and fail to realise that there is a wonderful woodland circular walk right in the very heart of Skipton. The entrance to Skipton Woods can be found a 5 to 10 minute walk from the holiday cottage at the end of Water Street as you walk into the town centre.
The wood can be found behind Skipton Castle and has been there for over a thousand yearsproviding a source of fuel and energy for Skipton Castle and local industries.
On your walk through the wood, keep a look out for wildlife such as bats, deer if you are really luck. Llowering plants, trees, grasses, sedges and ferns also flourish in Skipton Wood.

Days Out In The Yorkshire Dales – Malham
2nd February 2013
Situated in Skipton, the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales is Thisledo Holiday Cottage.
This self catering property makes an ideal location for a weeks stay in the Dales and for the next few blogs we will let you know some of the favourite days out our previous guests have mentioned.
A visit to Malham Cove is high on everyone list. The cove is a 260 foot amphitheatre shaped cliff formation of limestone rock. Once upon a time, a huge waterfall flowed over the cove as a glacier melted above it.

Our favourite way to visit Malham Cove is to park in Airton village and then walk along the River Aire public footpath to the village of Malham.

We usually time it so that we arrive in Malham around lunchtime, so that we can have a pint and a pub lunch at the Lister Arms (dogs are welcome) or the Buck Inn.

Fed and watered we then head off through the village of Malham to Malham Cove, before turning around and walking back to Airton. Then we head off back to Skipton where we can enjoy an evening out at one of the many restaurants or pubs in the town centre which are all located just a few minutes walk from the holiday cottage.
Skipton Pork Pies
25th January 2013
Skipton has a very famous Pork Pie shop called Stanforth’s located on Mill Street, practically opposite the Castle Pub. Many people reckon that Stanforth’s pork pies are the finest pork pie in Yorkshire!
Having one of the best pork pie shops close by to the holiday cottage would be something to let visitors know, but what they actually need to know, if that they are actually spoilt for choice!!
Skipton also has Farmhouse Fare on the High Street which is also an awarding pork pie establishment. In December 2012, they won their third successive supreme championship at the annual Great Northern Pork Pie Competition.
If that isn’t enough, Drake & Macefield butchers also sell award winning pies. They recently won one of only seven diamond awards presented in the annual Smithfield Awards, run by the Q Guild, but admittedly this was for their Steak & Kidney Pie and not for their delicious pork pies.
So, if you fancy some fast food with a difference, treat yourself to a Pork Pie, you’ll find plenty of other pie lovers to converse with outside the above shops.
A Message to All Dogs Who Love Snow
19th January 2013
Molly, the Cocker Spaniel reporting….
I love to be taken on long walks in the Yorkshire Dales & I encourage you to come and stay in the Yorkshire Dales in a self catered property. That way, you get looked after like you were at home without all the restrictions hotels place on us Dogs and you can enjoy some fantastic walks.
My favourite time of year is winter, I just love snow and the deeper the better!
I’ve been out with mum and dad this morning in the snow that fell over night. It’s great for tracking rabbits, pheasants, grouse, etc.
Here’s some photos of me out enjoying the wintery day. I did need a warm shower when I got home though!

Skipton & The Tour De France
18th January 2013
Yesterday it was announced that part of the Tour De France 2014 will take part through the beautiful, but challenging Yorkshire Dales.
Starting in Leeds on Saturday 5th July 2014, the first days racing will head towards Skipton and then out into the Yorkshire Dales via Kettlewell & Hawes towards Leyburn and then back through Ripon ending for the day in Harrogate.
I might peddle behind the peloton (that’s the main pack of riders & the also the end of my knowledge on the Tour) on my mountain bike, but then again!!!
If you want to book Thisledo Holiday Cottage for week commencing 5th July 2014, contact us now on 01756 795024 for details.
